This wasn’t addressed by Akai in the MPK261. One thing to note here is that a lot of people were requesting that they update their pad functionality. That means the MPK 261 is capable of 64 different sounds or samples to be assigned to the pads. You will find 16 different pads with 4 banks. If you’ve ever played in venues without a lot of lights on stage, you’ll know my frustrations. We are seeing more and more RGB products in the world today, and a big part of this is that they make it easier to see what you’re working with. These are awesome for playing in dark music venues as they basically light the top of your keyboard up. The MPK261 has some RGB backlit pads that are red, blue, and green. If you’re one for diving deep into the capabilities of a MIDI controller, you will really like the aftertouch. The Akai MPK261 has velocity-sensitive keys along with aftertouch.

I have always liked the way that Akai’s key-beds feel on my fingers.

The box that it comes in weighs about 16 pounds all in all. In the box, you will find an included USB cable, a quick start guide and a safety/warranty manual.

If you’re in search of a MIDI keyboard, it’s safe to say that the MPK series would be a great choice. It has all the essentials that you need and it also comes with some great software right out of the box. It is my opinion that the Akai MPK261 is one of the better MIDI keyboards that you can purchase for live gigs.

The MPC X is clearly designed to be the more complete studio version of the two MPCs announced today – and it’s a welcome upgrade for many users who want a full-size MPC but never really found the computer-anchored MPC Renaissance to be an attractive option.

Here’s the full feature set that Akai has shared with us in their press release:

It’s a bit more expensive than other portable production units like the Novation Circuit or Teenage Engineering OP-1, but the feature set is more akin to a production computer than either of those. This is the smaller of the two new MPCs announced today – coming in at just 5.5 pounds and powered off an internal rechargeable battery. This is a completely standalone unit with a full color touch screen, and powered by Akai’s new MPC 2.0 (more on that later). When the MPC Touch was announced in October of 2015, this is what every producer was hoping that model would be. Price: $1,199 ( order from DJ Techtools).
